Is "Lotts" a Jewish last name?

It is my maiden name, and I've been "informed" by my friends that my name is apparently Jewish, and I am just unaware, obviously.

I've tried searching a bit, but can't find anything worthwhile.

Is "Lotts" a Jewish last name?
Any name can be Jewish. A lot of names in the U.S. are identified as Jewish as a large portion of immigrants to the U.S. with certain names were Jewish, while back in their country of origin the same name was used by Jews and non Jews alike.

Jews do not agree on the definition of a Jew.

Reform Judaism defines a Jew by the religion alone.

Orthodox and Conservative Judaism defines a Jew by the mother alone, not the father or necessarily the religion. An Orthodox Jew will state if a person has a Jewish mother even though they do not consider themselves a member of t he Jewish faith, they are still Jewish.

However, if they don't have a Jewish mother only a Jewish father, they state the only way they can be Jewish is to convert.

In other words a person can have the name McCarthy and as long as they have a Jewish mother they are considered Jewish by Orthodox and Conservative Judaism.

This is what Ancestry.Com states about the surname Lotts

"English: patronymic or metronymic from Lott 1.

Possibly an altered spelling of German Lotz."

Apparently your friends knew someone who was Jewish named Lotts or came from a town where there were Jews named Lotts. You can tell your friends that their names can also be Jewish.

There are very few exclusively Jewish names. A lot of people think names ending in "stein" "burg"

"berg" "sky" "ski" are Jewish but they are not exclusively so.
Reply:Unless your friends have documentation of your ancestors.. they really are just guessing. It is common..but incorrect.. to assume a name to be a certain religion, or nationality.

Find where your ancestors came from, and what their religion was. .
