Is inman a Jewish name?

I assume you are talking about Inman as a family name, and the answer is that it could have come from a Jewish background, but it is not a name that is definitely one way or another. I have known a couple of people with that name, and as far as I know, only one of them was Jewish.

If you are asking about your own background, keep in mind that Judaism considers you Jewish if you are born to a Jewish mother (or if you convert, of course). Fathers don't count for this purpose. So, if a Jewish woman has a baby, that baby is considered Jewish, regardless of how it is raised. If the baby is a girl and grows up to have her own babies, her children, too, are considered Jewish. But the rule doesn't apply the other way. If a Jewish man has a child, that child is not Jewish unless the mother is too, or unless the child converts.

There are lots of historical reasons for this practice, but the most obvious one is that it is easier to establish who is the mother than who is the father, especially before the invention of things like DNA testing.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck!!
