Hasmon? jewish name?

hello, a funny question here: is "hasmon" a jewish name? do you know any jews called hasmon(or anyone else for that matter!)? (it is from "hasmonean", like mattathias of hasmon)

my father was called this and he was mizrahi, but i've never known another person called this before! unfortunately he died when i was very young, so i cant ask him :-( but i remember somebody saying it is a surname and somebody else saying this name is forbidden due to being reserved for line of david? it is also my middle name, so i am even more curious

many thanks, and shalom

Hasmon? jewish name?
Hello. No i dont think it is a COMMON jewish first name, but any jew would know its jewish straight away! i have heard of it being a surname, in iranian jews it is " hasmoani" but as far as im sure alot of mizrahi names are different from ashkenazi and sometimes sephardi too. I thinks its due to the obvious arab influences. I know there is a tradition of naming by time of year for jews in india, was he born around hannukah? or maybe it was something personal to your grandparents.

as for it being forbidden, im not aware of it, so i dont think it is. if you dont mind my saying, it is a very cool middle name for a girl.

so really be pleased its not common, but at the same time, a jew would recognise it as jewish :-)
Reply:I haven't heard of it. I'd look in a baby names web site under biblical or Hebrew names to see if they have it listed. Good luck.

Shalom Aleichem
