My grandmother's last name is Leevey, and I'm trying to figure out if she was Scottish or Jewish.
Is Leevey a Scottish or Jewish last name?
It could be either, actually. It may stem from the Scottish/Irish Dunleavy or Leavy, or the Hebrew Levi/levy. In any case, they would all be corruptions. Try running a geneological check trace to verify which. Scotland is the home, and has been for many centuries, to many Jews who were persecuted in other parts of Britain, but I would not count on Jewish ancestry without exhausting the more probable Celtic/Anglic variations on the name.
Reply:Jewish.

Reply:Sounds Jewish but wouldnt your parents or other family be able to tell you?
Reply:Genealogy has very little concern with origin of names.
Many times a name can have more than one origin.
The only way you can know for sure is to trace your family. Start with your parents and work back. Work on one family line and if you come to a brickwall, set it aside and work on another.
If you want more information on this, there are people on this board who can give you a lot of ideas.
