Did you know that "Barak" is actually a Jewish name from the Bible?

Judges 4:6: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?sea... .

Thank you very much to all who answer.

Did you know that "Barak" is actually a Jewish name from the Bible?
yes it is derived from the verb lbrot "to bless"
Reply:This is what's called a false cognate. The name "Barack" is of Semitic origin and is related to the Hebrew "baruch" = "blessed". (Note that Swahili originated as a trading language for East Africa and Arabia and so has many Semitic - Arabic and Hebrew - roots.)

The Biblical name meaning "lightning" is "Barak", spelled differently in Hebrew. There's no connection, therefore.
Reply:No, I didn't know that. Very interesting.

I'm guessing that you're posting this in an attempt to squelch the ugly "Obama's a Muslim" rumors, and while I appreciate the effort, it doesn't matter one way or the other to intelligent people. A name is just a name, and doesn't affiliate you with one group or another just because of its origins.

My name is of Hebrew origin, and I was raised Catholic, and am now an atheist, so names mean little, if anything.
Reply:Found in Judges and pronouncd Baw-rawk

Our Pres elect is Barack though... and that is not in the bible at all.

Reply:The meaning of the name Barak is: Flash of lightning. In the bible the valiant fighting man Barak cooperated with the prophetess Deborah to win victory in battle against overwhelming odds.
Reply:It sounds like the hebrew word for lightening. But it is of a completely different source.

It's suwaheli pseudo-arabic and means "Benediction"

(Hebrew: barakh)
Reply:Yes, I did know.

Since the transliteration from Arabic is phonetic anyway, claiming it's spelled different is just goofy.

Reply:Actually, "Barack" is a Kiswahili name, and it means "blessed one"
Reply:If you're talking about Obama, his first name is spelled differently.
Reply:it is a hebrew word that appears 21 times as a word (lightning) and 13 times as a name in judges 4 and 5
Reply:Yes dear.

Sadly, there still be haters of the person bearing the name Barack.
Reply:But Obama's name is Barack, you spelled it wrong.
Reply:so is David.
Reply:yeah, it means lightning flash,
